Business owners
Exiting without losing the value you built.
Retirement planning for owners whose biggest asset has never been on a brokerage statement.
Whether you sell to a buyer, a partner, your family, or your employees, the structure of the deal shapes what you keep. Then the business stops paying you, and the portfolio has to. We plan both halves.
The moment
The sale is the beginning of the plan, not the end.
Many owners spend years on the sale and weeks on what comes after. The after is where the taxes land, where the proceeds have to be invested, and where the income the business used to provide has to be rebuilt from scratch.
An exit planned two to five years out gives you more choices about structure and timing, and lands you in retirement with a plan already running.
What we plan around
From the letter of intent to the first retirement paycheck.
Deal structure
Asset versus stock sale, installment payments, earnouts, and seller financing, modeled against your personal tax picture.
Tax on the proceeds
Timing the close, charitable strategies, and spreading gains across years where it helps.
Replacing the income
The business paid your salary, your benefits, and often your car and phone. We design a retirement paycheck that replaces all of it.
Retirement plans
Rolling or closing the company 401(k), cash balance plan, or SEP, and what to do with your own balances.
The five-year tax window
The years after a sale are often your lowest-income years in decades, which can make them a good time for Roth conversions.
The next chapter
Consulting, a board seat, a second venture, or stepping all the way back. The plan funds whichever you choose.
How it works
Planning that starts before the letter of intent.

Why Wurz
A family business that knows what it is to hand one on.
Wurz Financial Services is a second-generation family firm. We know what it is to build something, and what it is to pass it to the next generation. Richard Wurz started the firm in the 1980s, and we have helped owners through many market cycles since.
We are fee-only, so there is no product on the other side of our advice about your proceeds.
Questions we hear
Before you sell
How much do I need to sell for?
That is the first number we work out together, based on the life you want afterward and what your other assets can provide.
Should I take installments or a lump sum?
The tax answer and the risk answer can be different. We show you both so you can decide.
What about my key employees?
Retention bonuses and employee ownership structures can be part of the conversation, coordinated with your attorney.
I have not decided when to sell. Is it too early to talk?
No. Two to five years out is when planning has the most room to work.
Thinking about stepping back in the next five years?
Let’s plan the exit and what comes after. One 20-minute call to start.
